What Do We Do Here?

Explaining a vision can be difficult especially if it is new.

But sometimes your vision comes to life, and the need to explain simply vanishes.

Let me paint the picture for you.

On a recent Wednesday, I looked around our space and “it” was happening.

What do we do? Well, it looks like this.

Early that morning, Dele and his team from 21st Century Church - one of our co-working organization - arrived for a meeting upstairs. They are building an amazing, multi-ethnic community, and we are proud to be their home base as they seek to find a building of their own.

While they were meeting, a young woman arrived who needed a quiet place to have a tele-health visit. Her friends arrived later, livening up the first floor.

Later that afternoon, our team had a wonderful visit with Eric Kearney and toured the new African American Chamber of Commerce building. Soon after we returned to our space, Bri came across the street from the library with her 6-year old, Jace.

They were curious to discover who and what our space is for.

Soon Jace was busy doing paper-punch “works” to earn his cup of cocoa, and Bri was commiserating with Caitlin about virtual learning and sharing her plans to get a realtor’s license.

Another co-worker, Andrew, started doing magic tricks. Jace was enthralled, especially when Andrew let him in on a few of his “secrets.”

Then Carrie and her daughter Ferris arrived in a celebratory mood. When I turned around from my work, I found Ferris deep in conversation with Kayla, explaining her novel-in-progress while Carrie, Caitlin and Bri were gathered around the cafe table hatching plans for a Game Night.

Then I introduced Gigi, a cosmetology student, to Bri, and suddenly a whole new avenue of conversation and connection had begun.

We found out that Andrew learned to do close-up magic specifically to help him navigate social situations in light of his autism diagnosis.

That led to even more connection and conversation.

At the end of the day, everyone pitched in to clean up. We left in a wonderful joyful mood.

What do we do?

That’s what we do.

Simply put, we exist to create space and offer hospitality to help people connect and to bring our neighborhood together.
